So my teacher/mentor Kristen Butera and I were having a discussion once and came up with 83 different variations to tree pose. This amazed me at first because it was one of my first explorations into a pose and I could believe that there were so many. As far as I knew there was one correct way to do a pose and that was it, nothing else, so to hear that there were more… 83 was crazy to me. I have since come to look at my practice in this way all the time. No pose has only one way of doing it. Each pose manifests itself in our bodies in order to create something unique to only one person.
So I didn’t want to just take 83 poses of myself, but I did want to point out some of the key physical things that we looked at to find variations. (Keep in mind there are other aspects to each pose such as the mental state, the intention, and the level of experience of the person doing the pose as well as the attitude of the pose, and the general feel of the class/instructor.)
